Background:
Visund was the name of the longship built for King Olaf (c.1027) of Norway, a fierce Viking chieftain. “Visund” means “bison” or “bull” and the head of the ship was adorned with bull’s head in gold.

This song, however, is fiction. It regards a Viking warrior who wakes up adrift on a piece of shattered wood, finding that her brethren had abandoned her and her Valkyrie did not find her, even though she had died in battle.

She sees a vessel that looks just like Visund approaching, but it is a crewless longship, charred by fire. When the Viking warrior climbs on, she realizes that this ‘sister-ship of Visund’ is in fact, her funeral boat, charred by the fire that consumed her body at her funeral.

Now trapped out of Valhalla and not alive, she vows to live again and sail her funeral ship, against the will of fate.
