The song is about the Icelandic compass or sign post, the Vegvísir, using the compass as metaphor to impress upon the listener to follow the signs in their lives, to look for signs that will lead to their destiny and happiness.
Many people are too afraid of following their heart, and ignore their Vegvísir in fear of failure or hardship -- a grave mistake that leads to a melancholy life.
